Jallianwala Bagh massacre: A dark chapter

Jallianwala Bagh massacre is one of the darkest pages in the reign of the British Empire in India. British troops fired at an unarmed demonstration in Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, on April 13, 1919. The assembly was taken during the celebration of the festival of Baisakhi and protest was also in progress against the Rowlatt Act, which gave authority to the British government to arrest Indians without a trial."Referring to the magnitude of tragedy, Blackman stated, "After that massacre, 1,500 died and 1,200 were wounded. He urged the government to admit its past errors and stated, "Can we have a government statement accepting what went wrong and formally apolozise to the Indian people.

The violence of the British army

The British soldiers, commanded by General Reginald Dyer, fired without notice and cut off the only route to the garden, shooting down hundreds. The government's count put over 500 killed, although other estimates placed the death toll in much higher figures. In 2019, then UK Prime Minister Theresa May had spoken of "deep regret" over the atrocity and described it as a "shameful scar on British Indian history". Yet, he stopped short of offering a formal apology, which is still being asked for by many, particularly Blackmen.
